My name is Karen and I am the creator of Stilly River Soap Co. We live about an hour north of Seattle, nestled in the Pilchuck tree farm, surrounded by nature.
The beautiful Stillaguamish River runs through our small town of Arlington. We call it the Stilly River. You may have heard about it in the news in 2014 when the Oso landslide devastated a small community called Oso on the outskirts of Arlington. The Stilly River is home to the Eagle Festival sponsored by the Stillaguamish Indian Tribe.
I moved from the outskirts of Seattle to Arlington about 10 years ago. Even though I have been making skin products and I have been a practicing herbalist for almost 25 years, the beauty of the natural setting gave Stilly River Soap Co its name.
I had an injury from work that kept me home for several years and I decided that all of these wonderful things I had been making for years for myself and friends and family, needed to make their way out into the world and bring joy and healing to others as well.
“I was fascinated by essential oils and herbs and anything naturally made.”
I’ve had my cosmetologist license since 1989, which is where my background in skincare first started. My dad was an avid outdoorsman and I spent my childhood trekking across the mountains in the Pacific Northwest.
While his passion was hunting mushrooms, I was fascinated by the plants and this is where my love for herbs, native wild plants, and natural remedies was born.
I was fascinated by essential oils and herbs and anything naturally made and still soak up as much information I can find.
I attend workshops and classes when time allows and have dedicated myself to what has become a lifelong journey and my passion.
“I think when something truly is your passion and it’s your joy and truth, you never tire of it.”
I work from home but I also work at a community non-profit that fights poverty and homelessness. I sell in numerous shops locally and frequent local craft fairs.
I’ve had a passion for natural remedies all my life, and the abundance of nature and all the plants and herbs offer an unending classroom for education. We are so blessed to have nature provide us with such an abundant arsenal for our health and healing.
I think when something truly is your passion and it’s your joy and truth, you never tire of it.

I always have a few favorite products, but with summer coming, I’m really excited to offer items for summertime weather. You’ll find a great-smelling sunscreen lotion and an amazing burn lotion that works miracles available on Stilly River Soap Co’s store.

“I grow many of the herbs I use in my products.”
I’m an avid gardener and grow as much of our own food as possible. We are blessed to have a few acres that give us plenty of room to grow enough for our family, and any surplus is donated.
I grow many of the herbs I use in my products. It brings me joy to use what I grow to create products for my customers. There is a great satisfaction in knowing where your food and herbs are grown.
I have a couple dozen chickens — and my other half and I are also apprentice beekeepers. I’m a huge advocate for recycling, repurposing, and reusing so I always have projects happening that are usually crafty and sometimes practical and occasionally just an attempt to save things from the landfill.
We love to spend time in nature with our two dogs: Huck is an active Boxer/Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix that we rescued, and Sage, our Chocolate Lab, is our spoiled princess. Rounding out the habitat are three cats: Zoey, Cleo, and Missy (also all rescues).
Both my other half and myself are avid music lovers and we love outdoor concerts. We also have a great little boat that we love to take out into the San Juan Islands for a getaway from our busy lives.
“Creating products that are all natural and environmentally friendly — and that make a difference — means everything to me.”
For me, the biggest accomplishment I can have is making a difference in someone’s life — whether it’s providing a product that helps soothe irritated skin or a medicinal remedy that alleviates pain from arthritis or helps rapid healing during a cold or flu.
Creating products that are all natural and environmentally friendly — and that make a difference — means everything to me. Even if I never made any money, if I helped someone, that is my greatest accomplishment.
“I love hearing feedback that lets me know now how I’m doing and where I can improve if needed.”
I take a great amount of pride in the products I offer and I love the relationship I have with my customers. I love hearing feedback that lets me know now how I’m doing and where I can improve if needed. I love hearing that I’ve made a difference.
Customer service though is of the utmost importance to me. You can have the greatest product in the world but if you don’t treat your customers well, at the end of the day, you are wasting your time and theirs.
