What is Mindfulness, Anyway?
Mindfulness is defined as “a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.”
It’s often used as a therapeutic technique to help people de-stress and reduce anxiety.
Check out these six tips for a more mindful life:
1. Simplify your routine.
Our society just loves the idea of multi-tasking, but it’s not all that conducive to a mindful life.
If you find yourself struggling to stay on top of your work obligations, family responsibilities, and everyday demands, then it’s time to stop pretending that busy equals happy.
Simplify your life by cutting out the non-essentials, and start prioritizing the things that really matter. Don’t overextend yourself to suit someone else’s idea of success.
2. Actively listen.
It’s all too easy to get wrapped up in thoughts and insecurities, but doing so makes it hard to give others our full attention.
Rather than zoning out or planning a response while other people are talking, actually focus on what they’re saying.
Interestingly enough, getting out of your head is a good way to be more mindful — and it’s a wonderful way to improve your communication skills and relationships in general.
3. Have creative pursuits.
Find a creative pursuit that you enjoy or have always wanted to try, and make time for it on a daily or weekly basis.
Whether it’s painting, photography, journaling, or crafting, these activities are instant stress relievers and help guide you toward self-discovery.
4. Spend some time alone.
It doesn’t matter if you’re an extroverted social butterfly or an introverted wallflower.
Spending time alone is the best way to get back in touch with your thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs.
Make time throughout the week to spend a few hours all by yourself, and get comfortable in your own skin.
5. Take care of your health.
One of the fastest ways to gauge your current level of mindfulness is to take a look at how you treat your body.
Do you exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, and get adequate amounts of sleep?
For many of us, these healthy habits end up taking a backseat to other things on our to-do list — and the effects can be detrimental to our overall well-being.
Focus on taking care of your body by eating nutritious meals, sleeping for seven or eight hours each night, and aiming for at least 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day.
6. Find the good in life.
Life is full of so many things to be thankful for, and it’s important to remind yourself ofÂ all the good stuff.
Spend just a minute or two each day acknowledging the blessings in your life. Practicing positive thinking on a regular basis is essential to mindful living.
