You’ve seen them everywhere by now: charcoal skincare products are all the rage, but what makes charcoal so great for your complexion?

We’re counting down the top five benefits of this topical all-star to see what all the fuss is about.

The Nitty Gritty: 5 Charcoal Skincare Benefits

1. It prevents breakouts.

Charcoal is known for its impressive abilities to absorb dirt and impurities, and this quality definitely translates to the skin.

If you regularly wear makeup, touch your face, or are just acne-prone in general, charcoal can ward off future breakouts by eliminating germs and bacteria from the skin’s surface.

Essentially, it keeps your pores clean and reduces the chance of experiencing any pesky blemishes.

2. It keeps oil at bay.

If your skin always feels like an oil slick, then charcoal products are a must for restoring your complexion’s balance.

Charcoal doesn’t just pull out impurities from the skin — it also draws out excess oils.

This can help your makeup stay put for longer amounts of time, and it can reduce the amount of setting powder you need to complete your makeup look.

Of course, you don’t want to dry your skin out entirely, so limit your charcoal use to around once a week. Those with dry skin will want to avoid charcoal altogether or just use it sparingly as a spot treatment on blemishes.

3. It sloughs away dead skin.

Charcoal is a natural exfoliator thanks to its grittiness, so its a great way to cleanse your skin while getting your glow on.

Reveal brighter, healthier skin and enhance your moisturizer’s performance by adding a charcoal scrub to your skincare arsenal.

4. It deep cleans.

Your skin comes into contact with a lot of unwanted environmental toxins and impurities throughout the day, and that can ultimately lead to acne and dullness.

Charcoal soaks up all those bad guys to keep your skin looking and feeling extra fresh and clean.

5. It soothes and refreshes.

Insect bites, cuts, or scrapes? Just add charcoal!

This multi-tasking ingredient actually soothes inflammation, relieves itching, and helps sores heal when it’s applied topically to the skin.
